Halloween is the second-biggest face-painting weekend of the year (the first is the Christmas / December festive cluster). Demand spikes in mid-October and slots book out four to six weeks in advance — if you're planning a Halloween party, get the painter locked in before the second week of October.
The Halloween spectrum
Halloween designs span the widest range of any theme — from "smiley pumpkin for a three-year-old" through "fully gored zombie for an adult party". It splits into three zones:
Friendly (under-7s)
Smiley pumpkins, cute ghosts, cat-style witches, cartoon spider on the cheek. Designed not to spook the smaller kids, but still feel "Halloween". Almost zero refusals from this age band — the kids love a pumpkin face.
Spooky (7–12)
Full skeleton, classic vampire (with fangs and minimal blood), regular witch with green skin, the full-cheek spider with web running into the hairline. Older kids in this range often ask for "actually scary" — painters deliver something that looks dramatic in photos but won't get them sent home from school the next day.
Full SFX (10+ and adult)
Day-of-the-Dead skull (with floral and geometric patterns), full zombie wounds, broken-doll, slashed-throat illusions, severed-stitching work. Many painters do these regularly for adult Halloween parties and corporate Halloween activations. Allow 15–20 minutes per design.
Book early — really
Painters routinely turn away Halloween-weekend bookings that come in after mid-October — there is no flex once the date is full. If you're reading this in September or earlier, lock the date now and worry about details later.

Shopping centres, banks, motor dealers, residential estates running Halloween family days — multi-artist activations run across the whole final week of October. Ask for a quote three months out for the best chance.

Is Halloween face paint OK for under-5s?
Yes — but painters tend to stick to the friendly side of the catalogue (cute pumpkins, smiley skeletons, friendly ghosts, cat-style witches). Save the bloodier zombie / vampire designs for 7+.
Can the painter come in costume?
Many painters offer this — witch, vampire, and skeleton costumes are common wardrobe items. Ask the painter and mention which fits your event when booking.
Day-of-the-Dead skulls — yes or no?
Yes — and they are one of the most popular Halloween designs for 10+ and adult bookings. The geometric flower-and-pattern work photographs beautifully.
What about Halloween for adult parties?
Stage make-up territory — broken-doll, gothic skull, slashed-throat, gore. Many painters do these for adult parties and theatrical events. Send the painter the brief and ask whether they can tailor it.
Booking lead time for Halloween weekend?
Critical — 4-6 weeks ahead at minimum. Halloween weekend is the single busiest day of the year and painters book out months in advance. Slots from mid-September are usually first-come.
Are the designs sweat-proof for trick-or-treating?
Reasonably — water-based paint survives mild perspiration but not direct rain or rubbing. For night-time outdoor activities, the cheek-version designs hold up better than full-face.
