12 easy face painting ideas for kids (even if you cannot draw).
All 12 designs below can be done in under 2 minutes each with a basic kit and zero art training. Each one is a real design we have seen parents pull off at home. If you have more than 6 kids though, just book a professional — you will spend the whole party at the paint table.
What you need
- A small starter kit — Snazaroo or any cosmetic-grade water-based set (R80–R250 from most party stores or online). Never craft or acrylic paint.
- Two sponges — one for large colour areas, one for blending.
- Two brushes — a fine brush for outlines, a medium brush for fills.
- A small bowl of water to rinse brushes between colours.
- A face cloth and mild soap nearby for accidents and clean-up.
- A mirror the child can see during and after.
The 12 easy designs
1. Cheek butterfly
Two coloured teardrop wings on each cheek, a line down the middle (the body), three black dots up the forehead for the head and antennae. Time: 2 min. Universally loved.
2. Cat whiskers
Pink dot on the tip of the nose, two black "whisker" dots on each upper lip, three lines extending outward on each cheek. Time: 60 seconds.
3. Spider on the cheek
Black blob (body) in the centre of the cheek, eight little legs radiating out, optional web lines extending towards the temple. Time: 90 seconds. Halloween favourite.
4. Heart on the cheek
Two small circles joined at the top, downward point at the bottom. Pink or red base, white highlight dot on one side. Time: 30 seconds. Toddler-tested.
5. Star on the temple
Single five-pointed star next to the eye. Gold or silver. Add a small glitter cluster. Time: 60 seconds.
6. Tiger stripes
Orange sponge across the cheekbones and forehead. Black brush stripes — short, angled, randomly placed. White muzzle between the lips and nose. Time: 5 min. Higher difficulty, higher payoff.
7. Frog forehead
Green base on the forehead, two large white circles (eyes) above the eyebrows, black dot inside each white circle. The child's actual eyes stay visible below. Time: 3 min. Photographs incredibly well.
8. Half-face Spider-Man
Red base on the upper half of the face only (forehead to bridge of nose). White curved eye-shape patches over each eye. Thin black web lines extending across the red. Time: 4 min.
9. Princess crown
Yellow or gold zig-zag line across the forehead. Three small jewels (red, blue, green dots) along it. Two glittery "tassels" hanging down at the temples. Time: 90 seconds.
10. Unicorn cheek
White triangle (the horn) on one cheek, swirled with gold. Small rainbow underneath. Three tiny stars around it. Time: 2 min.
11. Pumpkin face
Orange base over the whole face (sponge). Black triangle eyes, black zig-zag mouth. Optional green leaf-stem on the forehead. Time: 4 min. Halloween go-to.
12. Single coloured cheek with glitter
The lazy-genius option. One coloured sweep across one cheek (any colour), glitter pressed into it while still wet. Done. Time: 30 seconds. Kids 2–4 love this.
Practical tips for the parent doing the painting
- Wet the sponge first for large colour fills — wring it out, then load colour. Goes on smoother than a dry sponge.
- Hold the child's chin firmly but gently to keep their head still. Most movement comes from giggling.
- Brace your wrist on their chin or cheek when doing detail work. Steadies the line dramatically.
- Black goes last — outlines and detail over the top of base colours, never underneath.
- Glitter goes last — press into still-wet base or a thin dab of clear gel.
- Keep wipes nearby — fix mistakes within 30 seconds before the paint sets.
When to give up and book a pro
Honest list:
- More than 6 kids and you wanted to enjoy the actual party.
- Themed party where everyone wants matching designs (princess, superhero) — you cannot maintain quality across 15 kids.
- You spend more than 5 minutes on the first kid and realise you have 19 more to go.
- Kids start asking for specific characters (Spider-Man, Elsa, unicorn) that you cannot pull off.
- You want the party photos to look great rather than "Mum tried".
A two-hour booking with a professional painter in Gauteng runs R900–R1 500 — about the same as a third good cake. Often the better trade-off when you weigh up actually enjoying your kid's party.
