Face painter vs character actor — what to book?
Both are kids\' party entertainment, but they solve different problems. A face painter is an activity that fills two hours with one painter at a station. A character actor is a moment — a costumed performer who appears, interacts, photographs, and leaves. This guide helps you decide.
Side-by-side
| Factor | Face painter | Character actor |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 2-3 hours typically | 60-90 minutes typically |
| Kids served per booking | 16-30 (full-face) or 50-70 (glitter) | All kids interact with the character; no throughput limit |
| Cost (Gauteng) | R900 - R1 500 | R1 500 - R3 000 |
| Best age | 3-12 | 3-7 (where character immersion still works) |
| Take-home value | Every kid leaves with a painted face / photo | One memory, many photos |
| Filling time | Yes — kids queue and paint over a long window | No — performer arrives, performs, leaves |
| Effort from host | Low — painter sets up themselves | Low — performer arrives in character |
| Photo quality | Excellent (painted-kid portraits) | Excellent (kids meeting character) |
When face painter wins
- You need 2+ hours of activity (the painting takes time and fills the window)
- Big party (30+ kids) where one character actor would be swamped
- Budget is in the R900-R1 500 range
- Mixed ages (face painting works from 2 to 12; character actors target 3-7)
- You want every guest to take something tangible home
When character actor wins
- You want a "wow" moment, not an ongoing activity
- Party is short (90 minutes or less)
- Kids are 3-7 and obsessed with one character (Elsa, Spider-Man, etc.)
- Budget is R1 500-R3 000 and the character is the headline
- You\'re already doing food / games / cake and just want a special interaction
When to book both
For mid-sized to large kids\' parties (20+ kids) with a budget of R3 500+, booking both is the strongest format:
- Character actor arrives early — meet-and-greet, brief activity (story, dance, game), photos with each child. ~60 minutes.
- Character actor "has to leave" — exits dramatically (returns to her castle / runs to save another planet / etc.).
- Face painter continues — kids queue for face designs matching the just-departed character. Painted faces become their "magic memory" of the day.
This format consistently produces the best post-party feedback we see.
Third option: magic show
For older kids (5–10), a magic show works where character actors fade. Some listed painters offer magic shows alongside face painting — check individual profiles. More on face painting vs magic shows here.
