Face painting for weddings — the kids\' programme.

Most weddings have a few children. Some have many. In either case, keeping the under-12s entertained while the adults focus on the ceremony, speeches and party is one of the simplest, highest-impact things wedding planners do. Face painting does this better than almost any other option — kids are happy, parents are free, and the photos are great.

When to schedule the face painter

Two effective slots in a typical wedding day:

  1. Cocktail hour (after ceremony, before reception) — 60 to 90 minutes when adults are mingling with drinks and canapés. Kids drop in, get painted, run around, photograph well in the wedding photos.
  2. During reception speeches — the time when kids most want to misbehave and parents most need them not to. Booking a painter for the 45 minutes of speeches turns chaos into calm.

Most wedding bookings use the cocktail-hour slot only. A 2-hour booking can cover both.

Theme matching

Weddings have palettes — most often soft / pastel / metallic. Painters match accordingly:

  • Soft / pastel weddings — pale pinks, blues, soft golds. Princess and unicorn designs with restrained glitter.
  • Rustic / country weddings (farms, wine estates) — earth-tones. Jungle / animal designs, flower crowns, butterflies.
  • Modern / glam weddings — black, gold, silver, white. Mature designs (festival-style butterfly wings, gem accents).
  • Beach / coastal weddings — blues, sea-greens, white. Mermaid scales, dolphin, sea-life motifs.
  • Halloween-themed weddings (yes, these exist) — coordinated Halloween designs.

Practical wedding-day logistics

  • Setup location: A quiet corner of the cocktail-hour space, ideally with shade and good light
  • Setup time: 30 minutes before kids arrive
  • Brief the wedding planner: They should include "face painter arrives at X time" in the wedding-day timeline
  • Coordination with caterer: Place the painting station away from food/drinks to avoid mess
  • Photographer briefing: Mention to the photographer — painted-kid shots are some of the best candid wedding photos

Frequently asked questions

Why book face painting at a wedding?

Two reasons. First, it keeps the under-12s entertained during the long stretch between ceremony and reception. Second, it gives kids something to do during the speeches, when parents most want them not to interrupt. The whole point is helping the adults' wedding go smoothly.

When during the wedding does face painting happen?

Most commonly during the cocktail-hour gap (after ceremony, before reception). Some weddings book a second slot during reception speeches. Two-hour bookings cover both windows.

Theme matching with the wedding?

Yes — most weddings have a colour palette and tone. Painters match colours (rose-gold, white, pastel), and offer designs appropriate for the venue (princess for elegant venues, jungle/animal for country / safari weddings).

Hartbeespoort wedding venues — how does that work?

Common — Pecanwood, Estate d'Afrique, Glenburn Lodge, the various dam-side wedding venues. The painter travels from Pretoria. See our Hartbeespoort page for travel logistics.

What's the typical booking size?

One artist for 2 hours covers most weddings with 10-20 kids. For larger weddings (30+ kids), a second artist or a glitter-tattoo station works better than one painter struggling through the queue.
