Cost questions

  • How much does a face painter cost? Most painters price by package rather than strict per-hour. The first hour runs from about R1 100 and each additional hour about R600, with one painter covering about 12 children an hour. See the full cost guide.
  • Is it cheaper to book by package or per child? Packages. Per-child pricing only makes sense for very small groups.
  • Do face painters charge for travel? Most include travel within their home area. Beyond that, a flat fee may apply — confirm on the profile.
  • Should I pay a deposit? Payment terms vary by painter. Some take a deposit; some ask for full payment upfront. Check the profile.
  • How much should I tip? Not required, but a small tip for a private party is always appreciated.

Throughput and timing questions

  • How many kids can one painter paint per hour? About 12 full-face designs an hour. Cheek art is quicker, so more children fit when families pick simpler designs. See throughput math.
  • How long does a full-face design take? Around 5 minutes per child.
  • How long for cheek art? A minute or two.
  • Should I book one painter or two? One painter suits most home parties; add a second artist for larger crowds. Multi-artist bookings add the same package rate per artist.
  • How early should I book? Aim for 1-2 weeks ahead for an ordinary weekend, and as early as you can for Halloween and December dates, which fill up fastest.

Safety questions

  • Is face paint safe for my toddler? Yes from age 2 with cosmetic-grade water-based paint. See safety guide.
  • What brands are safe? Established cosmetic-grade brands such as Superstar, TAG Body Art and Diamond FX. Full brand list.

  • What if my kid hates it once it\'s on? Wipe it off with a wet cloth immediately. No drama.

Design and theme questions

  • What\'s the most popular design? Butterfly (cheek), princess tiara, Spider-Man, unicorn, tiger. See the designs catalogue.
  • Can I get a custom design? Yes — send a reference photo. Common characters fine on the day; obscure ones need 2-week lead time.
  • Will the painter do my kid\'s specific character? Most likely. Naruto, Cocomelon, Bluey, Paw Patrol, K-pop — all done before. Ask in advance.
  • Can the painter dress in costume? Many do — princess, fairy, pirate and clown costumes are common. Ask the painter what they offer.

Logistics questions

  • Indoor or outdoor? Both. Outdoor needs shade.
  • What does the painter bring? Own table, chair, water, paints, brushes, gazebo if needed.
  • How early does the painter arrive? 30 minutes before the booked start.
  • How long does pack-down take? 15 minutes after the booked end.
  • Do I need to provide anything? Just a seat (stool or chair) for the child being painted. Painter brings everything else.

Glitter and balloons questions

  • What are glitter tattoos? Skin-safe cosmetic glitter applied through a stencil with hypo-allergenic adhesive. Lasts about 3 days. More on glitter.

  • What if my kid is latex-allergic? Face paint contains no latex. For balloon sculpts, ask for non-latex foil alternatives.

Can I customize the design for my kid?

Yes. Send a reference photo via WhatsApp before the event and the painter will plan it. Custom characters from less-common franchises (Naruto, Cocomelon, Bluey) need 2-week lead time.

What if the painter is running late?

Rare but happens. Professional painters arrive 30 minutes early so even with a slight delay they're still on time. Get the painter's direct phone number 24 hours before the event.

My child cried during last face painting — what now?

Common with under-3s. Try a cheek-only design on the painter's next visit instead of full-face. Or start with arm art so the brush isn't on the face. Most kids who refused at 2-3 are happy at 4-5.

Indoor or outdoor?

Both fine for the painter. Outdoor needs shade (gazebo) — paint dries too fast in direct sun. Indoor needs good lighting — natural daylight near a window is best.

Will the painter clean up after?
