Friendly Halloween (under-7s)
1. Smiley pumpkin
Orange sponge base across the whole face, black triangle eyes above the eyebrows, black zigzag mouth across the upper lip and lower face. Optional green stem on the forehead. 4 minutes. DIY-friendly.
2. Cute spider on the cheek
Black blob in the centre of the cheek, eight short legs radiating out. Add a smiley face on the spider's body for the youngest kids. 90 seconds.
3. Friendly ghost
White sponge base on the forehead, two large black-circle eyes, small black "O" mouth. The lower face stays uncovered. Photographs surprisingly well.
4. Cat witch
Standard cat design (whiskers, pink nose, eyeliner) plus a small black hat on the forehead. Friendlier than a green witch for the younger kids.
5. Mini-skeleton (cheek-only)
Single skull motif on one cheek — outlined in black, white interior. Quick, kid-friendly, dramatic in photos.
Spooky Halloween (7–12)
6. Full skeleton face
White base across the entire face, black eye sockets (a wide oval over each eye), black detail on the nose (an inverted triangle), and black line down the centre with little stitching marks across the lips. 7 minutes. Pro recommended.
7. Classic vampire
Pale base, dark shadowed eyes, two red fang marks at the corners of the mouth, optional small drip below one fang. Kid-version is bloodless or near-bloodless. 6 minutes.
8. Green witch
Green base on the face, warts on the chin, dark eyeshadow, optional small black hat motif on the forehead. Painter can come in costume to match. 6 minutes.
9. Spider full-face
Web pattern across the whole face starting from a centre point on the forehead, with a black spider sitting on one cheek. 8 minutes.
10. Werewolf cheek
Brown / black "fur" effect along one cheekbone and the side of the jaw, with subtle shadows. Doesn't cover much, but adds a creature feel. 5 minutes.
Full SFX (adults and 12+)
11. Day of the Dead skull
White base, full skull motif with intricate floral and geometric patterns around the eyes and on the forehead. Bright colour accents (red roses, blue stars). 15–20 minutes. Pro only. Stunning in photos.
12. Realistic zombie
Pale grey-green base, sunken-eye shadow work, optional wound prosthetics with red colour fill. Multiple shades of grey on the cheeks for depth. 15 minutes. Pro recommended.
13. Slashed throat / broken doll illusion
SFX-style work with applied prosthetic edges and shading to look like an open wound. 20 minutes. Pro only.
14. Gothic glamour
Smoky dark eyes, dark lipstick, black-and-silver gothic patterns extending from the temples — not gory, more "fashion Halloween". Popular with adult Halloween parties.
15. Witch (adult, festival-styled)
Heavy metallic eye work, painted-on cat-eye shadows, a single hand-drawn "spell" sigil on the forehead. Pretty rather than scary. Good for offices that want Halloween dress-up without horror.
What's safe vs what's not
- Stick to cosmetic-grade water-based paint (Snazaroo, TAG, Diamond FX). Full safe-brand list.
- Never use Halloween variety kits sold cheaply in discount stores — many fail SABS / cosmetic-compliance and have been recalled internationally.
- Avoid the eye area for under-4s.

Book early for Halloween weekend
Halloween is the single busiest day of the year for face painters. By mid-October most slots are gone. The only reliable way to get a painter for actual Halloween weekend is to book in September.
